Up close along the water’s edge you see many small roots from the vegetation. Acting as a Biological Filter, these roots pull many of the chemicals out of the water as it heads to San Diego Creek and Upper Newport Bay. Of course, billions of micro-organisms, invisible without a microscope, live in the water and soil to help make it happen.
Check out Activity 3 - Nature's Answer to the Sewage Treatment Plant to learn how to conduct an experiment in biological filtration.
